Does religion need a sound base in, or, conversely, should it be freed from, ontotheological metaphysics? With the works of Nietzche, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and, most recently, the deconstructionists, a strong challenge has risen to the metaphysical underpinnings of religious thought. Too often, though writers have either considered the demise of metaphysics a fait accompli, or they have written on theology as if Neitzche, et al., never existed. For the first time, Religion, Ontotheology and Deconstruction presents arguments on both sides of this hotly contested contemporary debate.

The essays in this book are divided into two sections. The first section consists of thinkers critical to attempts to deconstruct ontotheology, believing the attack on ontotheology to be an attack on the backbone of religion. The pieces in the second section view deconstruction not as a threat, but as a challenge, or aid, to religion and religious thought, arguing that ontotheology has played a significant historical role, but that its reappraisal is a necessary step towards a sound religious life.

The international panal of theological experts who contribute essays hail from philosophical backgrounds as varied as Neo-Platonists, Heideggarians, Wittgensteinians, Analytic Philosophers, Buddhists, and Death of God Theologians. Topics covered include a warning to deconstructionists that if they continue their attack on modern world views, they run the risk of retaining no social ethic; and a comparison of Heidegger's attempt to overcome ontotheology with the writings of the Zen Philosopher Nishida of nothingness.
