“...this collection of writings indicates that diverse voices can articulate common concerns and that the future of each and every Jew is linked to the success of the community as a whole.”–The Jewish Standard

“The eclectic group of thinkers represented in this book touch many nerves and expose important and sensitive issues. This well written and researched volume poses many provocative questions, suggests few concrete answers, but offers hope for the future of Judaism in the next millennium.”–Connecticut Jewish Ledger

Chosen as one of the alternatives to the main selection of the Jewish Book Club

Authored by a wide range of distinguished scholars, including philosophers, historians, sociologists and theologians, the essays in this volume consider whether a traditional folk Judaism centered on the Holocaust and the state of Israel can continue to serve as the bricks and mortar of Jewish Identity into the Twenty-First century. As the Holocaust moves from the realm of memory to history, can a meaningful religious identity be sustained on the basis of a historic catastrophe that is no longer personal or immediate? And can a political state continue to serve as the fundamental wellspring of Jewish identity?

This volume deals frankly with the problem of maintaining Jewish commitment and continuity in postmodern culture, with its radical emphasis on personal choice. Several essays highlight how Judaism, based on the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment tradition of universalism and assimulation, does not have the power to enchant daily life and encourage strong Jewish identification. Others offer sociological and theological programs that meet the challenges of the new age and describe how new developments can reinvigorate the tradition. A special feature of this volume is the inclusion of personal narratives by distinguished thinkers on the pushes and pulls of Judaism in their own lives. This is a volume that will help readers appreciate the new possibilities and realities for a vigorous Jewish life in the coming century

Among the contributors, are Livia Bitton-Jackson on Jewish feminism, Lawrence Kaplan on Jewish theology, Gilbert Kahn on Zionism, Richard L. Rubenstein on biography, and social context, and Yudit Greenberg on theology.

DR CHARLES SELENGUT is the author of many studies on the sociology and theology of contemporary Jewish life and is Professor of Religious Studies at Drew University. He has lectured on the rise of new religious movements at conferences throughout the United States, Europe and Asia and was a member of the University of Chicago's "Project on Fundamentalism" which published his monograph "By Torah Alone Yeshiva Fundamentalism in Jewish Society." His latest book is Seeing Society: Perspectives on Social Life.
